The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) in Collaboration with Huawei Kenya has officially launched the 2025 Cyber Security Bootcamp, a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering the country’s cybersecurity capacity as a critical component of its digital economy.
This program comes at a crucial time, as Kenya grapples with a rising number of cybersecurity incidents, highlighting the urgent need to equip the next generation with the skills necessary to safeguard the nation’s digital infrastructure.
During the award ceremony on Wednesday in Nairobi, Mr. David Mugonyi, Director General of the Communications Authority of Kenya, emphasized the importance of cybersecurity, stating, “Cybersecurity is a critical pillar in safeguarding our digital economy.

Initiatives like the Cybersecurity Bootcamp play a vital role in preparing the next generation of cyber defenders.” He applauded the participants for their dedication, noting that the skills they acquire will not only protect organizations but also enhance Kenya’s resilience against evolving cyber threats.

The initiative has become increasingly relevant as the global demand for cybersecurity expertise continues to grow, while Kenya faces a significant skills gap in this field. Mr. Mugonyi reaffirmed CA’s commitment to fostering a secure digital environment through capacity building, policy development, and collaboration with industry stakeholders.
Mr. Steven Zhang, Chief Executive Officer of Huawei, also addressed the crowd, celebrating the success of the bootcamp. “More than 3,378 students signed up for this program, with 540 completing the online resources and participating in evening lessons to earn the HCIA certification,” he reported. “This reflects a remarkable interest in cybersecurity among the youth.”

Zhang highlighted Huawei’s commitment to enhancing cybersecurity in Kenya, noting that the company has been a trusted partner in the ICT sector for over 25 years.
He expressed pride in the increasing representation of women in the program, stating that over one-third of participants were female, and acknowledged the diversity among students from 11 different counties.
As the bootcamp progresses, CA and Huawei are optimistic about the future of cybersecurity in Kenya. “Congratulations to all the finalists—your journey in cybersecurity is just beginning, and we look forward to seeing the impact you will make,” Mugonyi concluded.
