Protecting the Vulnerable from Sexual Exploitation

In the heart of Nairobi, a significant conversation unfolded at the launch of a new TV series by Akili TV, dedicated to safeguarding teenagers from sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA).

Eva Naputini, founder and CEO of the Africa Special Needs Network (ASPN), took center stage, passionately addressing the audience about a critical yet often overlooked issue.

“They want to be loved, they want to be seen, they want to be touched,” Eva began, emphasizing the emotional realities that many teenagers face. “If you don’t find a way of talking to them about it, they will seek that connection elsewhere.”

Her words resonated deeply, highlighting the vulnerability of young people, particularly those with special needs.

She pointed out that many teenagers, especially those with disabilities, often find themselves under the guardianship of adults who may not always have their best interests at heart.

“When these children receive attention from others, especially in manipulative ways, they may not recognize the crossing of personal boundaries,” she warned. The statistics are alarming. Many children face threats from adults, who exploit their need for attention and affection.

“They’re told, ‘If you say anything, I’ll hurt your family,’” she explained, underscoring the complexity of the situation.

ASPN as a network ,employs various strategies, such as social stories, visual aids, and role-playing exercises, to empower young people with the knowledge and skills to recognize and resist abusive situations.

Naputini also addressed the societal norms that perpetuate the cycle of abuse. “We teach our children to trust and obey adults, but this can be dangerous,” she noted.

Parents and educators play a pivotal role in this empowerment. Eva emphasized the need for open dialogue, urging parents to create safe spaces for discussions about sexuality and boundaries.

“Parenting is different now than it was years ago. We need to adapt,” she remarked, recognizing the changing landscape of adolescence.

The conversation extended beyond individual families. Eva highlighted the importance of community involvement in safeguarding children.

“It’s not just about what happens at home or school. We need a collective effort to protect our children,” she urged.

This includes training teachers and social workers in safeguarding policies, ensuring they are equipped to protect vulnerable children. Moreover, community sensitization is crucial.

ASPN actively engages with local leaders, health workers, and parents to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by children with disabilities.

“Even if we reach just one person who can take this message home, it’s worth it,” Eva emphasized.

“By demystifying conversations about sexuality and ensuring that children are informed and supported, we can nurture a generation that knows how to protect themselves and seek help when necessary,”She said.

In a world where silence often prevails, Eva’s voice shines brightly. Her commitment to advocating for the rights of children and addressing the complexities of sexual exploitation is a vital step toward building a safer future for all. As she aptly put it, “Let’s talk about it. Let’s empower our children to say no.”
